In recent years, China has witnessed a remarkable surge in the adoption of smart home technology, transforming the way people interact with their living spaces. Information from the latest Chinese market research by Hub of China, including comprehensive questionnaire investigations and group discussions in large and medium-sized cities, indicates that Chinese consumers are increasingly accepting the use of smart connected devices and artificial intelligence application solutions in their home environment. This change is a result of the increase in demand for convenience, energy saving, and the ability to afford lived experiences of the future.

The Rise of AI-Powered Home Assistants

From our sample, consumers are likely to use home assistants enhanced by artificial intelligence technology. Though foreign devices such as Amazon’s Alexa face language constraints and have little access to the Chinese market, players like Xiaomi’s Xiao AI and Baidu’s DuerOS are rapidly becoming popular in China. Robust sentiments towards the use of voice commands for the control of various environmental aspects inside the home were also voiced by most participants during the focus groups.

These AI assistants are now the command center for smart homes enabling users to control lighting, climate, and even appliances through voice. These assistants have also been complimented with the ability to work in conjunction with common messaging applications like WeChat, allowing users to operate their homes and feel connected to a part of their daily lives even though physically disconnected.

Smart Appliances Revolutionizing Daily Life

Another key finding from our Hub of China research is the surging demand for smart appliances. From refrigerators that can order groceries to washing machines that optimize water usage based on load size, Chinese consumers are embracing appliances that make their daily lives easier and more efficient.
The second significant insight from our Hub of China study is that smart appliances are fast becoming a growth sector. From smart refrigerators that can order groceries from retailers to washing machines that can determine the amount of water needed for washing depending on the load size, Chinese customers have resolved to have smart appliances that could help them in their daily lives.

Currently, companies such as Haier and Midea are leading the market to embrace smart appliances that can be operated by smartphone applications. Focus group participants highlighted the convenience of features like receiving notifications when the laundry is done or being able to preheat the oven on their way home from work.

The Appeal of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

The energy consumption and environmental concerns are fully understood by Chinese customers. From our study, it emerges that there is increasing public interest in smart home solutions that will enhance energy efficiency and sustainability. Programmable thermostats, automatic lighting, and energy tracking equipment are growing in popularity in homes since they make the consumers save more on electricity consumption and bills and hence reduce emissions.

For example, smart air purifiers have now become popular due to enhancing air quality which is an issue in most developed countries. Not only do these devices purify the air, but also display the current indoor air quality on the screen for consumers to decide.

Security and Peace of Mind

Smart surveillance systems and connected doorbells are the solutions that are in high demand because of the need for better home security. Hence during our focus group the Chinese consumers mentioned that they appreciated the possibility of controlling their homes from a distance and receiving notifications immediately in case of any suspicious activity.

Manufacturers such as Hikvision and Arlo are steadily gaining market ground by providing high-end smart security cameras that include facial recognition performance and AI-based abnormality detection. The synchronization of these security systems with smartphones has provided Chinese consumers with more control and comfort whenever they are at their workplace or during their travel.

The Impact of 5G on Smart Home Adoption

The adoption of smart home technology is fast growing in China due to the swift expansion of 5G networks in the nation. In our Hub of China study, we noted that increased broadband speeds have made the coordination of multiple connected devices throughout a household possible.
First, this functionality establishes the prerequisite for more complex smart home systems. For instance, smart mirrors that show headlines, forecasts, and daily health stats when people are getting ready for work are becoming trends in city homes.

Personalization and AI Learning

The Chinese consumer is savvying devices that can learn from their habits and adjust appropriately to the smart home device. AI-powered systems that can adjust lighting, temperature, and even music based on users’ habits and moods are seeing growing demand.

For example, there are Smart Lighting Systems like those that can exhibit daylight dynamics in order to enhance sleep quality, they are being patronized by the health-conscious sector. Likewise, smart home appliances that are connected and can recommend a dish based on the ingredients in the refrigerator, cooking options, and more are important to upward movers and chefs.

Integration with Smart City Initiatives

Our research also found that there has been a convergence between smart home technology and advanced smart city projects in China. With the increasing smartness of cities, consumers need to know how to connect smart homes to urban services.

For instance, some of the apartment buildings in Shanghai and Shenzhen raised the idea of experiences studying partial smart home systems that allow residents to book shared facilities, manage their waste, and engage in energy conservation in their residential compounds through smart home applications.

The Role of Social Media and Influencers

Currently, social media applications, including Xiaohongshu and Douyin, are acting as the key influencers of smart homes in China. Experts believe that social media personalities who reveal their modern homes and how they integrate smart home technologies into their everyday use are the reason why consumers are embracing the technology.

We determined from our focus groups that a considerable number of consumers come across innovative smart home products and concepts through such platforms and that videos were very useful in showcasing the value and capabilities of different devices.

Challenges and Future Outlook

However, it also has some challenges as analyzed by our Hub of China research in the context of this smart home trend. Some concerns raised by the consumers were the privacy of users, compatibility of the different brands, and the time that consumers may take before they are conversant with the new technology.

Nevertheless, there is much positive sentiment regarding the prospects of this market in China. We predict even more extensive penetration of smart devices into Chinese households as the technology develops and the prices drop down.
