Younger consumers are especially motivated by health benefits. They prioritize plant-based products that promote health over those aimed at weight loss. Brands focusing on nutrition, such as those rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, have been well-received by these health-conscious consumers.

Environmental Concerns Drive Consumer Choices

Concerns about the environment are driving many to adopt plant-based diets. As climate change becomes a global issue, the Chinese population is increasingly aware of the ecological impact of their food choices. One-third of respondents said they are reducing meat consumption or becoming vegetarian to help fight climate change. Government campaigns promoting sustainable eating have also contributed to this shift, raising awareness about the environmental effects of meat production.

China’s traditional food culture has always included plant-based ingredients, making it easier for many to shift to plant-based diets. Tofu, mushrooms, and other plant products have long been staples in Chinese cuisine. What’s changing now is the modernization of the plant-based movement, as food companies create products that appeal more to the Chinese market.

In our group discussions, participants mentioned pork, beef, and chicken as popular plant-based meat alternatives they are willing to try. It was common to hear brands like Omnipork and Z-Rou as these brands could deliver plant-based products and integrate them into existing dishes, oriental dumplings, stir-fried vegetables, hot pot, etc. Such inventions are placing PBE at the forefront of breakthroughs which would make it easy even for the most reluctant consumers to shift from their carnivorous habits.

Social Media’s Influence on Plant-Based Eating

Social media plays a key role in popularizing plant-based diets, driven by influencers and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). Focus group participants use platforms like Xiaohongshu and Weibo to learn about plant-based eating. Bloggers who share personal experiences, plant-based meal ideas, and nutrition tips influence young audiences.

Some participants follow plant-based influencers for advice on adding more plant-based dishes to their diets. Digital influence has made plant-based diets more accepted than ever. Additionally, social media promotes food products, helping consumers share knowledge about the benefits of plant-based eating.

Innovation in Plant-Based Products

As more people adopt plant-based diets, the food industry has responded by developing products that cater to the Chinese palate. Many of our participants were pleased with the growing selection of plant-based meat products in stores and food chains. To meet current trends, brands are offering products that closely resemble local Chinese food, such as plant-based pork dumplings and vegan hot pot.

Local businesses and global brands are using novel technologies to create plant proteins that mimic the flavor and texture of animal proteins. This helps consumers make an easy transition. Our China Market Insights revealed that taste and familiar flavors play a key role in selecting plant-based products. Brands that succeed in creating unique, palatable products are refreshing consumers’ memories of familiar flavors.
